Learn why. Is it true that women who are likeable are more likely to influence people than ones who are assertive? Difficult but true. Does "setting concrete, challenging goals consistently improve results"? Yes-and can you do it in a well informed, clear way? This book ends with "The female advantage" and negotiating at home. All of it is refreshingly clear and data based. .~

Cialdini R B. Influence: How and Why People Agree to Things, Quill, New York, 1984 ~ Based on sound science this engaging book will even help you do the hardest thing, say: "No." ~

Clever L H. A Checklist For Making Good Choices In Trying-Or Tranquil-Times, Western Journal of Medicine, January, 2001; 41-43. ~ Points out that fear is a choice and values drive good decisions. ~

Clever L. CEOs As Citizens. Health Forum Journal, March/April 2001; 21-25. ~Busy health care executives can take a breather and realize what's important in life. ~

Czikszentmihalyi M. Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience: Steps Toward Enhancing the Quality of Life, Harper Perennial, New York, 1991 ~Discusses the mysteries of optimal experiences, meaning, and happiness.~

Evans G. Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman: What Men Know About Success That Women Need To Learn, Broadway Books, New York, 2000 ~This powerful book, charming and packed with good tips, is replete with rules about "preparing to play", 14 basic rules for success in playing the game and, for example, 10 gender bender vocabulary words. ~

Fisher R, Ury W. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In. Revised. Penguin Books, New York, 1991. ~ Everyone needs to resolve conflicts, and this is a good start. An audiotape of the book is available. A follow-up book by Ury, Getting Past No: Negotiating with Difficult People, is a deeper exploration. ~

O'Neil J R. The Paradox of Success: When Winning At Work Means Losing At Life, A Book of Renewal for Leaders, The Putnam Publishing Group, New York, 1994 . ~ Its stories tell how the bright lights of success can cause shadows. It discusses successful and unsuccessful strategies for change. ~

Scott, S. Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work and In Life, One Conversation At A Time, Berkley Books, New York, 2002 ~ This informal, charming book has plenty of zing, stories, examples, and lists for improving relationships. Its 287 pages (with index and user's guide) make for a quick read but long thoughts - and changes for the better. One tip for leaders: say to yourself over and over, "Model what I want. Here's what I'd like from you. I'll go first." ~
