About RENEW

RENEW has found an answer to the yearning that many feel for effectiveness, a sense of calm and a positive direction. Regardless of age, most of us want to have meaning in our lives. We therefore search for purpose and, along the way, we would like some joy, too. RENEW's goal is to integrate an understanding of "renewing" and the ability to renew, into all learning experiences. Indeed, part of life-long learning is learning how to renew - how to maintain creativity, energy, and optimism and how to live personal values.

RENEW's founding president, Linda Hawes Clever, MD, MACP, internist and occupational health specialist, has a national reputation for activism and for professional and community service. Galvanized by the growing exhaustion she saw among fellow health professionals and inspired by the work of John W. Gardner, founder of Common Cause and former Secretary of Health, Education & Welfare, Dr. Clever and colleagues formally launched RENEW in 2000. A project of the Institute for Health & Healing at California Pacific Medical Center, our not-for-profit organization is supported by program fees, grants and individual gifts.

RENEW participants search, define, discover, analyze, even write about their personal values. We discuss successful ways to live these values while managing complex responsibilities and priorities. As we affirm values, we can tap into deep sources of energy, motivation, and talent. RENEWing is for people willing to wonder and quest, people willing to think and explore. The result? Lives, relationships, communities, companies and organizations with increased tensile strength and resilience. Our lively key-note presentations, workshops and consultations, collegial Conversation Groups©, and the Convener Development Program appeal across the career spectrum. We work with health professionals, attorneys, teachers, volunteers, leaders and followers whether in the not-for-profit, public, or private sectors. We work with the full spectrum of age and experience, from students to people who are changing jobs or careers to people who are leaving jobs or careers.

In addition, we offer a special program, RENEWal for Leaders, that addresses renewing, the essential yet often neglected element necessary to sustain individual and organizational effectiveness.

We also explore dimensions of change such as opportunity, risk, and decision making, along with the option to choose our own attitudes. Tough transitions, losses, resilience, rituals, and data-based suggestions for health maintenance also provide subject matter. Learning how to say, "No" and how to gather or re-gather allies, mentors, and other healthy relationships are high on the agenda as well. Self-awareness and self-advocacy, of course, are key.

With our active Board of Directors and Panel of Advisors, RENEW continues to build a strong funding base, design new curricula, and refine evaluation systems. RENEW seeks to thrive, to inspire others, and to stimulate positive change. We intend to advance the field of renewal and to disseminate our findings.

RENEW is in the forefront of a new movement to sustain the sustainers - the individuals upon whom society depends. We invite you to join us on the adventure.
